Seward's population has a growth spurt from it's meager 3,000 up to 15,000 to 20,000 people on
the 4th of July weekend, depending on whether a cruise ship is in dock. Runners are preparing
for the Mt. Marathon Race. A race that follows city streets, and then up the face of Mt. Marathon, a
climb of over 3,000 feet to the top. Then back down, through the streets again, to where they started.
The fastest run time being approximately 45 minutes. Legend has it that the race began in 1909,
when two sourdoughs, in a local drinking establishment, wagered whether someone could climb up and down
the mountain in under an hour. The winner did it in 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The downtown area becomes crowded with people as everyone prepares for the Mt. Marathon race
start. Not only is there the typical male and female divisions, but there is also a children's division
(not sure on the age limits). The children's division goes half way up, and are restricted to a safer
section of the course.
