Seward Fire Volunteers standing by on the morning of 4th of July

Mount Marathon, the mountain where many will test their abilities against mother nature.  This race starts in the downtown area of Seward and then up a "shoot" onto the mountain.  Parts of the race must be climbed due to the steepness of the trail.  Racers must watch their footing, one wrong step and they could find themselves in a possibly deadly slide, or fall.  This is not a race for the timid.  Racers have found themselves speeding past the competition, only to find themselves rolling, spinning out of control on the rocky and treachorous trail.  In this picture, you can see the "Runner's Trail" that goes up the face and back down.  Due to the dangerousness of the race, the officials limit the number of people to about 350 in total.  People have been known to camp out infront of the Chamber of Commerce office for days, waiting in line to sign up for the race.
